Raymonde Tranchemontagne, a designer at WonderBra since 1969, kindly accepted to answer our questions in order to give us an insider’s look at the iconic Canadian brand of undergarments.
Raymonde, can you tell us about your position? What exactly is your role?
As director of design, I’m responsible for innovation and the creation of new products. One part of my work is dedicated to searching for new fabrics, as much for their aesthetic as for the technical qualities.
Keeping in mind the latest market trends, I supervise the creation of new collections; follow up on adjustments, fittings, pattern grading as well as managing all the communication and information necessary to put different styles into production.
What are the different steps in the fabrication of a given model of bra? And How long does it take to get from the design table to the store shelf?
I’ve divided the work into three major steps:
The first part includes design and creativity, consisting of researching fabrics and aesthetics, as well as all the tests for the quality and durability of the fabric before a collection can be created.
Secondly, the most technical part includes fitting of the basic sizes (for example, 34 or 38, B, C, D or DD) on women of differing body types. This is how the garments are tried and measured. Then we modify the patterns and give them back to the sample room to have the garment sewn until we get the fit we’re looking for. All this is followed by “wash & wear” to ensure the comfort and the quality of the garments.
Finally, we grade all the sizes and establish sewing methods that will allow us to reproduce bra samples on a production line.
In summary, over a period of 10 to 12 months, we have designers, pattern-makers and engineers working on dozens of small modifications in order to make the production samples, this ensures for the best fit and maximum comfort.
What have you learned about women through your work with WonderBra?
Women love lingerie. Some of them like to wear lace everyday or for special occasions. Others prefer more classic styles that cling like second skin and are invisible under clothing. For some, comfort is everything, while others are ready to sacrifice comfort in favour of a feminine touch.
However, shopping and trying on intimate apparel to find the right bra size can be difficult for some. In order to help women with their decision making, we recommend getting properly fitted before selecting bra styles that address their current needs. Once in the changing room they should properly adjust their bra and look at their profile to judge their appearance and most importantly, to try on the bra while wearing normal clothing.
What would be your all-time favourite WonderBra model?
A seamless bra which creates a natural silhouette and that can be found in a variety of colours and fabrics, starting from micro fibres to laces. (Styles include: 2483, 3351, 3451, 7409, 7483 and in WonderBra Plus 1983.)

And finally, how has the WonderBra brand evolved over the years?
Since the push-up bra, which really made the WonderBra name, several factors have contributed to its evolution, such as the new technologies used to make seamless bras in Non-stretch or multifibre fabric. The integration of newer better performing fabrics, into our creations, has allowed us to offer consumers a greater variety of under garments that respond more closely to their expectations in terms of comfort, performance and appearance.
Tricks, tips and the right bras to start off the new year in fine form
The holidays are over and the last round of turkey leftovers is gone. Phew! Now it’s time to get back into shape, make healthy resolutions for the new year and take care of yourself. WonderBra has a simple and efficient way to take you there. So, let’s go!
1 – Get off to a good start by choosing an activity you enjoy
Are you the zen or traditional type? With only 20 to 30 minutes of activity 2 to 3 times a week, you can burn off those excess calories stored up while hibernating over the holidays. It doesn’t matter which activity you choose. What counts is that it suits your lifestyle and that it’s fun.*
Zen-style exercise with gentle moves
This exercise style became popular several years ago and has become increasingly widespread. Exercises like yoga and Pilates help firm up your muscles, while improving your flexibility and posture. These low-impact exercises generate high returns, since they make you work on small hard-to-reach muscles that people tend to forget. You can exercise in a group or on your own at home. All you need is an exercise pad. Since these are floor exercises, the impact on joints (knees, etc.) is minimal.
Traditional exercise that keeps you on the move
Jogging, aerobics and spinning are ideal sports for women who like to stretch their legs and work up a sweat. These types of exercise give you a good cardio and endurance workout, while melting off those extra pounds. You can exercise in a group (with a teacher) or own your own. Tip: Exercising while listening to lively music makes you feel more motivated.
2 – The right bra from the WonderBra Sports Bra collection
Whether you just want to go for a stroll or work out at the gym, think about buying an activity-appropriate sports bra. Just like running shoes, a sports bra is a must-have accessory. The four bras below are suitable for all activities. Regardless of your shape or size, WonderBra Sports bras can be adjusted for maximum comfort and support. They highlight your feminine curves, and provide maximum support when you need it most during activities.
Ultra-soft COOLMAX® breathable moisture-wicking fabric, styles 5126 and 5127 help you stay dry, while providing ultimate comfort. Soft back closures help reduce skin irritation.
Style 5925 is the perfect bra with breathable fabric, seamless cups, adjustable shoulder straps and a V-shaped back that provide the right level of support and superior fit.
Style 5926 – Wide camisole shoulder straps provide stability and athletic styling, while its two-ply molded cups and wide elastic under bust band provide the right level of support and superior fit.
The WonderBra sports Bra collection is incredibly comfortable and well designed with special features that adapt to your body. Click here for information about sizes, more details and suggested retail prices.
What’s your basic starting point? The right size, of course!
Since the holidays festivities and some minor weight fluctuations, your bra size may have changed. It’s important to wear a properly fitted bra. Remember that your bra size may also have changed if you:
- Have lost or gained weight
- Have started or stopped an exercise program
- Are pregnant or just gave birth
- Have not had your measurements taken in more than a year
To guide you with your measurements, we recommend that you visit a professional fitter at your favorite store. A few minutes of your time can make a world of difference!
As always, WonderBra is here to support you. We would love to hear your comments, suggestions and questions.
* Always consult a professional before starting a new exercise program.
