Breast health – Top 10

image_top10Breast cancer awareness starts with a healthy lifestyle and early screening habits. Here is a Top ten list about breast health provided by the Quebec Breast Cancer Foundation.

1. MAMMOGRAM
Have a mammogram every two years after the age of 50.

2. CLINICAL EXAMS
Go to your doctor once a year for a clinical examination.

3. BREAST OBSERVATION
Listen to your body and be aware of any changes.

4. TOBACCO
Stop using tobacco and avoid second-hand smoke.

5. NUTRITION
Eat healthy. A diet that is low in fat, rich in fiber and well-balanced with fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of breast cancer.

6. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY
Run, walk, move. A minimum of four hours of exercise a week reduces the risk of breast cancer.

7. ALCOHOL
Moderate your alcohol intake.

8. HEREDITY
Be vigilant. Consult your doctor if there is a history of breast cancer in your family.

9. WEIGHT
Watch your weight. People who are overweight have a higher risk of developing breast cancer.

10. BALANCED LIFE
Lead a balanced life and avoid stress. Physical and emotional well-being leads to good health.

Be Breast Aware

•    Talk to their health care professionals about breast health
•    Look and feel for changes in their breasts, and have any changes checked
•    Have regular clinical breast exams, and screening  when age and risk appropriate
By finding breast cancer early, treatments can be more effective, and lives can be saved.

Live well

GET ACTIVE
Aim for 30 minutes or more of daily activity
EAT WELL
Enjoy a balanced diet high in fruits and vegetables
LIVE SMOKE–FREE
Don’t smoke. And try to avoid exposure to second-hand smoke
LIMIT ALCOHOL
If you drink, limit your consumption to one drink or less per day
